The skinny on official, English-subbed Asian Films & TV
It's Raining (Ike)Men: English Subtitled Movies Starring Your Favorite Japanese Actors
Tokyo Dogs Buddies
The Japanese film industry is made up of more than just Johnnys, and because most other agencies have slightly less crazy strangleholds on their celebrities, more and more contemporary Japanese movies are being licensed in English speaking nations (or with English subs upon their initial releases). The below is a perpetually growing list (organized by actor) of officially licensed, English subtitled films available in R1 (unless indicated).

*For quick reference, titles in bold and underlined are available in Region 1.

Not sure where to shop? Trying to avoid bootlegs? Check out my retailers page to get the skinny on reliable online stores out there!

If you know of any movies I've missed or if there's an actor you think I should include, please drop me an email or leave a comment.

Tip regarding ordering DVDs from other regions listed as having English subtitles: I often email the retailers to make sure that the film really is subbed, or I snoop around Japanese cinema sites (like Nippon Cinema!) to find out what's actually been subbed. The listings on retailers are mostly correct, but every once in a while, you'll get one that's not. The extra step is totally worth it for peace of mind, especially since you're going out of your way to get an official edition.

ilu for using my favorite abba song in the cut text ♥

and also i didn't know that gs wonderland was officially subbed! i still haven't watched the fansubbed version (it's been sitting on my harddrive for ages) so i might as well just spring for the official version. haha.

I love that song to an embarrassing degree! Like, I will totally dance around when I hear it, regardless of where I am. :)

(I'm totally adding this tip to the body of the entry. Thank you for making me think of it.)

FYI - GS Wonderland IS subbed, but just the movie itself - not the special features. Nippon Cinema, one of my favorite sites, talks about it a little bit.

Just thought I'd add

EIJI WENTZ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eiji_Wentz)
Gegege no Kitaro (http://asianmediawiki.com/Gegege_no_Kitaro)
Gegege no Kitaro: Kitaro and the Millennium Curse (http://asianmediawiki.com/Gegege_no_Kitaro:_Kitaro_and_the_Millennium_Curse)

I'm not sure if either movie has been licensed overseas but both Japanese DVD releases do come with English subtitles. I own the DVD for the first movie and the subtitles are, scarily, quite accurate.

Wentz is also a very popular actor here in Japan (not to mention a good-looking one) and stars in many things, so there could be more he's been in that's been released overseas.

Thanks for letting me know about the Region 2 DVDs!

I'm actually familiar with Eiji Wentz (and a fan), and I have the Region 1
Gegege no Kitaro
, however, it's unfortunately no longer licensed in the states. I didn't know that the Japanese version had subs, so when I do an update of actors for the list, I'll make sure to add him, and I'll check on his other movies, too. Thanks again!

just wanted to say that Bokutachi to Chuzai-san no 700 Nichi Sensou (700 Days of Battle: Us vs. The Police) with Ichihara Hayato is aviable with eng subs (but region code 2) too.

http://www.yesasia.com/us/bokutachi-to-chuzai-san-no-700-nichi-sensou-dvd-collectors-edition/1011080121-0-0-0-en/info.html

though it's not a licensed movie in US i guess only a japanese movie with eng subs x3

that brings me to what i wanted to ask actually i just found this community a few minutes ago and it seems kinda interresting (since i love to buy the original DVD's of japanese movies with subs) but i'm from europe (so i have region code 2) and i saw that this community is mainly about US licensed DVD's ~
so i wanted to ask if you have the intention to extend this side to region code 2 and 3 too?! or not?! because there are quite a lot Movies with code 2 and 3 (and eng subs) too! And i'd really like to know what comes around with eng subs ~ and i'm sure there are more people out there xD
well yeah if you'd like i can even kinda help out with region 2 movies since i have a few lot myself ♥ but they are not licensed in europe i guess and not in the US so maybe it's not even what you wanted with this com =(

Hi, there! Thanks for letting me know about
Bokutachi to Chuzai-san
. I totes appreciate info like that, and I'll be sure to add it to the list when I make my next set of updates.

I don't know if you noticed, but a number of the movies in the above list aren't just R1 releases. While I generally focus on North American releases, it's mainly because of logistics and not because I'm not interested in listing other region releases. I'm based in the U.S., and all of my industry contacts are based in North American licensing companies, so it easier for me to get information about them than it is to get info about European and Asian releases. I'm totes happy to add officially licensed and English-subbed DVDs from other countries, though, so please do let me know when you come across titles.

Thanks again for the DVD suggestion! :D
